History & Description
Sand Beach, the community’s earlier name, was selected for a government harbor of refuge in 1872. Breakwalls created a sheltered anchorage where ships could wait out dangerous conditions. An early skeletal light marked the eastern entrance.
The present lighthouse first shone in 1885. Its foundation was separated from the breakwall to reduce the shaking caused by waves. A cast-iron shell encloses rooms on several levels, making the tower both a working light and a place where keepers lived.
Coast Guard personnel stopped living at the station in 1967, when the light and fog signal were controlled from shore. The original fourth-order Fresnel lens was removed in 1996 and displayed at the Grice House Museum.
The preservation society has restored the tower and rebuilt the adjoining fog signal building. Today, their familiar white walls and red roofs give the station a distinctive profile from the harbor.
