History & Description
The harbor’s first beacon began shining in 1870. A taller steel beacon followed in 1902, while the building that became Big Red was constructed in 1907 to house a steam-powered fog signal and quarters for assistant keepers.
In 1936, a tower was added above the fog signal building, combining the light and audible signal in one structure. The twin gables remained beneath the square tower, creating the familiar outline seen across the channel today.
The building was painted red in 1956. Local preservation efforts gathered momentum in 1974 with the formation of the Holland Harbor Lighthouse Historical Commission. Ownership transferred to the commission in 2007.
Todd’s photographs show the lighthouse from across the channel, with beach grass, changing clouds, and sunlight giving each view a different setting. The low building and taller tower make a distinctive composition against the lake horizon.
