Little Sable Point Lighthouse

A red-brick beacon among the Lake Michigan dunes

Little Sable Point’s warm brick rises above pale sand, dune grass, and the blue-gray water of Lake Michigan. The solitary tower gives this stretch of shoreline its unmistakable landmark. From the beach or a winding path through the dunes, a small change in viewpoint brings the lake, bare trees, and lantern gallery into a different arrangement.

History & Description

Little Sable Point Lighthouse was established in 1874 to help vessels navigate Lake Michigan’s eastern shore. Its 107-foot tower lifted the beacon above the sandy landscape, while a third-order Fresnel lens concentrated the light for mariners offshore.

The tapered brick shaft is the heart of the station’s design. Narrow windows interrupt the masonry, and an ornate gallery supports the lantern high above the beach. The surrounding dunes make the tower’s height especially striking: there is little nearby to compete with its silhouette.

The brick was originally exposed, then painted white in 1900 to improve visibility during daylight. The tower later returned to its familiar natural brick appearance. The keeper’s dwelling is no longer standing, leaving the lighthouse as a solitary reminder of the station that once occupied this shoreline.

Today its maritime history and beach setting draw visitors to Silver Lake State Park. Lakeshore Keepers supports the lighthouse’s preservation and welcomes visitors for seasonal tower climbs.
