History & Description
McGulpin Point first shone in 1869, helping vessels navigate the Straits of Mackinac. The tower and keeper’s quarters were built of Cream City brick, with the tower joined directly to the dwelling.
The station’s Norman Gothic design belongs to a family of Great Lakes lighthouses that includes Eagle Bluff and Chambers Island. The building’s pale masonry and steep gables contrast with its red roof and lantern trim.
In 1906, the light was discontinued because nearby Old Mackinac Point was more visible to shipping. The lantern and lens were later removed, and the property became a private residence.
Emmet County purchased the site in 2008. Restoration included a rebuilt lantern, and the lighthouse reopened in 2009. It now serves as a historic site and private aid to navigation.
Todd’s photographs show the tower and dwelling from several angles, highlighting the brickwork, windows, green shutters, and entrance steps.
