History & Description

Middle Island takes its name from its position between Thunder Bay Island and Presque Isle. The station helped mark this stretch of Lake Huron and the sheltered waters behind the island.

The lighthouse first shone in 1905. Its conical brick tower carried a fourth-order Fresnel lens, while the broader station included quarters and buildings needed to maintain the light and fog signal.

The Coast Guard records automation in 1961. Preservation work later became part of the station’s story: the Middle Island Lighthouse Keepers Association formed in 1992 to help restore and protect the property.

Todd’s photographs show the tower from several points on the water, including a kayak approach. Its wide colored band remains distinct from a distance, while closer views reveal the lantern, gallery, and surrounding station buildings.

Visitor Information

Reaching the island
Middle Island is a boat-access destination. Confirm current transportation, landing permission, and site access before planning a visit. Tour and lodging arrangements can change.
Tower and buildings
Do not assume a tower climb or interior visit is available. Ask the site operator which grounds and buildings are included in any arranged visit.
Water conditions
The crossing is on Lake Huron. Discuss weather and route conditions with an experienced operator. A calm shoreline photograph does not describe conditions for a later crossing.
Photography
A wide view includes the rocky shore and forest; a closer composition emphasizes the tower’s colored band and lantern. From a boat or kayak, keep equipment secure and maintain a stable position.
