At the end of Ontonagon’s west pier, a compact beacon stands on open steel legs above Lake Superior. Its glowing lantern and spare industrial shape mark the harbor entrance, a different kind of landmark from the brick lighthouse farther up the river.

History & Description
As Ontonagon’s harbor piers extended into Lake Superior, a light closer to their outer ends became necessary. A beacon was established on the west pier in 1875, supplementing the main lighthouse beside the river.
Storms and changes to the pier repeatedly challenged the early light. The present iron beacon dates to 1900, replacing its wooden predecessor after storm damage.
The tower’s enclosed upper section sits above an open framework of legs and bracing. A gallery surrounds the lantern, giving the small structure a distinctive silhouette against the lake and sky.
The pierhead light was historically tended by keepers from the main Ontonagon station. Today, the two landmarks tell complementary stories: one preserves the keepers’ home, while the other marks the exposed harbor entrance. The pierhead structure was sold at auction in 2019, with Coast Guard access retained for its navigational equipment.
Visitor Information
- Viewing the light
- Look toward the west pier from public beach and waterfront areas on the east side of the Ontonagon River. Shore-based views capture the beacon and harbor entrance together.
- Access
- Plan for exterior viewing. Do not assume the tower or pier is open to visitors; follow posted restrictions and respect private property.
- Lake conditions
- Waves, wet surfaces, and ice can make exposed piers and shoreline rocks hazardous. Stay on safe public ground when conditions are rough.
- Photography
- Evening light can bring color to the horizon behind the beacon. A long lens isolates the lantern and steel framework, while a wider view includes shoreline rocks and the channel.
- Nearby history
- Pair your visit with Ontonagon Lighthouse. The Ontonagon County Historical Society offers information about the area’s maritime heritage and visits to the historic brick lighthouse.
