History & Description
A lightship station began marking Poe Reef in 1893. A permanent lighthouse followed in 1929, providing a fixed beacon for vessels navigating the South Channel.
The station’s square tower rises from a substantial concrete crib. Its contrasting black-and-white sections and red lantern roof give it a recognizable appearance across the water.
The original light used a third-order Fresnel lens. Automation in 1974 ended the need for a resident Coast Guard crew, while the navigational role continued.
Todd’s photographs show both the tower’s details and its offshore setting. The broad crib, surrounding railings, and stacked tower levels reveal how the lighthouse combined working space with a highly visible beacon.
