History & Description
Point Betsie’s beacon began serving Lake Michigan mariners in 1858. The station stood along a busy stretch of shoreline where lightkeepers watched the lake and tended equipment through changing weather.
The tower was built from Cream City brick and connected to the keeper’s residence. Its compact height is amplified by its position above the shore. The white walls, red roofs, and green trim form the familiar station visitors recognize today.
The fog signal building added another means of warning ships when visibility was poor. Together with the dwelling and lighthouse, it preserves a fuller picture of the work and daily life of the station.
Automation in 1983 ended the need for continuous on-site operation by keepers. Today, the Friends of Point Betsie Lighthouse supports preservation and public interpretation, while the beacon continues its navigational role.
Todd’s photographs show winter ice and snow around the station, along with elevated views of its roofs and lakeside setting. The red fog signal building is featured alongside the lighthouse itself.
