History & Description
Port Austin Reef Light began operating in 1878 to warn vessels away from the reef north of Port Austin. Its offshore position places the warning directly beside the navigational hazard.
Following a fire, the station was modified into the brick structure in 1899. The tower rises above an attached keeper’s dwelling, while the broad pier lifts the entire station clear of the surrounding water.
The lighthouse remains an automated aid to navigation. The Port Austin Reef Light Association owns and preserves the station, carrying its maritime story forward through restoration and public access.
These photographs circle the station from water level. Close views show the masonry, lantern, red roof, and weathered pier; the distant composition emphasizes how isolated the lighthouse is from shore.
