William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse

Belle Isle · Marble, bronze, and Art Deco detail beside the Detroit River

A slender marble column rises from a stepped base at the quiet end of Belle Isle. The William Livingstone Memorial is both a working lighthouse and a piece of Detroit architecture: fluted stone draws the eye toward a bronze lantern, while carved ornament gives the entrance the character of a civic monument.

History & Description

William Livingstone led the Lake Carriers Association from 1902 to 1925 and advocated for Great Lakes shipping. This memorial was dedicated on October 17, 1930, five years after his death, combining a tribute to his maritime work with a useful navigational light.

Albert Kahn’s firm designed the monument, with ornamental reliefs by Hungarian sculptor Géza Maróti. White Georgia marble gives the tower its distinctive surface, and the vertical fluting emphasizes its height. Small sculpted eagles finish the flutes below the bronze lantern.

Above the entrance, a stylized figure and motifs associated with wind, stars, and water link the monument’s Art Deco language to navigation. The stepped base and restrained shaft make the structure feel closer to a commemorative column than a conventional keeper’s station.

Its setting on Belle Isle connects the memorial with the busy Detroit River waterway. From the surrounding paths, the tower stands against water, trees, and open grassland—a quieter counterpoint to the industrial shipping system it commemorates.
